Manuals

With our manuals, we want to make a contribution to improving safety standards in shipping. Whether it is about fighting fires on board seagoing vessels or the safe use of alternative fuels such as ammonia - our books offer practical solutions and in-depth expertise for ship crews, firefighters, shipping companies and anyone interested in ship safety.

Accidents and hazardous situations occur time and again on seagoing vessels at berths and in areas close to harbours. These range from accidents at work on board to the release of hazardous substances and rapidly spreading fires. Shore-based fire brigades can also be deployed to combat such incidents. Compared to their day-to-day work, however, firefighters are deployed on a ship as a relatively rare event and often lack routine experience of the special features on board.

This book describes the ship-specific features that may be encountered by shore-based firefighters during an emergency situation on board seagoing vessels.

The maritime industry is facing one of the biggest challenges in its history: the transition to more sustainable and environmentally friendly propulsion solutions. In view of the increasing pressure to reduce emissions in shipping, ammonia, among other things, is coming into focus as a potential fuel.

The simple molecule, consisting of nitrogen and hydrogen, burns without releasing carbon dioxide and is therefore increasingly being discussed as an alternative fuel. At the same time, however, ammonia is a toxic gas whose safe use on board ships requires comprehensive knowledge of how to handle this substance and precise planning. This book is intended to support ship crews, shipping companies, harbour operators and authorities in this respect. Recommendations are given for handling ammonia both in normal operation and in the event of an accident, and special challenges are pointed out.
